Parents often feel isolated with regards to their child’s education. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including not meeting class staff face to face on a daily basis, the child being non-verbal and unable to communicate what he or she did in school that day and some verbal children preferring not to mention anything about school sometimes as a result of their inflexible thinking.We always encourage parents to contact school / pass on important information via child escorts, telephone or in person. Formal meetings with parents to discuss their child’s progress occur at least three times per year depending on individual needs.

Over many years, we at Uffculme School have developed our learning programmes, approaches, strategies and our environments for children with autism. Your own child’s teaching and learning programme is summarised in one document the Passport (Personalised Autism Specific Support).
At a glance, you can see the types of learning programmes and support your child currently receives. These may include: levels of staff support, types of communication / language / behaviour programmes, types of rewards as well as the facilities your child accesses.
Your child’s Passport will remain with your child throughout his/her time at Uffculme and will be updated on a yearly basis – every Spring Term. Once you child reaches year 6 it will be incorporated into a transition passport with the aim to aid your child’s transfer from primary to secondary school.
Other areas which may impact on your child’s learning are also identified on the last but one page as is a general description of how a child with ASD may experience the world. You may find this useful when describing your child to family, friends or people in your community.
